The Hand Behind the Ink
Angel Frost is an award-winning artist from the heart of Flint, Michigan. India ink and a Tachikawa dip pen are her weapons of choice, having been introduced to the art of ink illustration at an early age through Manga and Silver Age comic books. Angel's own art draws from Ralph Bakshi films, mangaka Mitsukazu Mihara, and comic artist Neal Adams.
A natural artist since childhood, Angel began her technical training at the Flint Institute of Arts. Angel studied oil painting in the VADC's Fine Arts program and held an internship position at the Greater Flint Arts Council in 2012. Angel also worked with the city of Cape Coral, participating in many art shows and gallery receptions at the Cape Coral Art Center. She would win Best in Show for her painting Thomasina in the juried exhibition Art Focus 2025. Other awards include the VADC's Gold Award, 2nd place in Witching Hour: Phobias, Merit Award for the multimedia piece BabushCat Lantern, and Honorable Mention for a white pencil on black paper portrait of Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Both a painter and an illustrator, her works between these two mediums are striking contrasts. Rendered with the solemnity of an Itinerant painter, Angel's acrylic paintings are liminal snapshots of natural, ancient, or urban environments. Meanwhile, "dark shojo" illustrations pop with energetic fantasy characters clad in elaborate costume designs.
Angel Frost now operates across Michigan as an independent art instructor hosting workshops and art classes. She's always creating new artwork for ongoing projects, commissions, exhibitions and community events. To explore her body of work, please visit Angel's Art Gallery.
